Comedy my ass. Maybe I got the wrong impressions of it (from TV trailers), but it is certainly no comedy. Its a story about a Mexican women (Paz Vega) who is abandoned by her husband with a six year old daughter. She comes to American for what else, in search of a better life. She finds work as a maid to a restaurant owner (Adam Sandler) and his wife (Téa Leoni) who have their own set of problems, mainly Leoni's depression and her problem with her daughters (played wonderfully by newcomer Sarah Steele) weight. When the family moves to Malibu for the summer, they want Vega to come as well and she refuses because it is too far away from her apartment and her daughter (Shelbie Bruce). Leoni tells her to bring her daughter and so they all move in to Malibu where the trouble starts. Leoni sees Vegas daughter as a new chance to overcome the failure she perceives of her daughter and starts taking her shopping and spending time with her. Neither Sandler (who does a good job in this movie) nor Vega like the attention being shown and form a bond while discussing the numerous problems.
The movie is narrated by Bruce through an essay when she is 18 applying for admission to Princeton. Cloris Leachman plays the grandmother who had a career as a professional jazz singer and is no a lush and along the way sees the error of her ways and the collapse of her daughters marriage and tries to save it.
Its a good movie with some good acting, but not a feel good movie.

I don't really care one way or the other, but the wife didn't like the ending. It was one of those movies that once it got going there was really only one way it could realistically end. Anything else would have been a cheesy Walt Disney ending.
Overall a good movie. Sandler again shows that he is a good actor (NYU trained)--not just the big misfit everyone initially thought he was. I loved the Billy Madison/Happy Gilmore type movies, but I think they hurt his credibility.
