Drundel Was Late,
But...
I shot a
banded pintail as a result! Ol' Drundie drawers was running
late for a hunt with Waller and I and as a result we ended up
hunting the marsh instead of some freshwater flats on the far
South end of the Ranch.
It had been pretty slow and we
only had 3 birds to show for our effort. About 9:30, a group
of about 25 pinnies is heard overhead. Didn't have any pintail
drake decoys out and only 3 hens but Drundie and I blew at
them with the whistle just for the hell of it. As soon as we
hit 'em a couple times they banked like a squadron of F-16's
and headed right into the decoys.
Wings cupped and
landing gear down, we each picked a lane to shoot. Waller
picked a bull on the left and Drundie aimed in the middle on
the right. Right as I was pulling up on a nice Bullin the dead
center, something shined off one of the bird's legs below it.
I instinctively pulled off the bull and dropped the other bird
with one shot as did Waller. Drundie shot a couple of times
and another bull went down about 75 yards away.
Not
really thinking about why I pulled off one bird for the other,
I reloaded and sat there waiting for any other birds to come
by while Randy and Brad went to get birds. Randy gets his bird
first, a nice bull with a hella sprig, and then walks over to
mine. He picks it up and starts to go help Brad, and then he
tells me a minute later there's a band.
Of course I'm
thinking, yeah ol' sh!thead is trying to pull a fast one on me
since I give him hell all the time (aka a Haydel or Lucky Duck
band). But no, a real live band. Pretty cool. That's my first
pinnie band.
Anyway, here's some pics for ya'lls
enjoyment...
Me with the banded pin...

Obviously that made the hunt!
