Thumbs up A nice Retrieve by Drake @ the Refuge hunt

I really want to brag on a retrieve my dog made at the Refuge hunt on Saturday. For those of you who train dogs, you can well understand the time it takes to teach this. TexasWaterfowler has helped me work with the pup to help make this happen:

My dog, Drake, made a nice est 400 yrd blind on Sat at the Refuge gang hunt. While it wasn't a terribly difficult retrieve, he did it and made me proud. We had a wounded snow go down hard in the field in front of us. I took Drake to recover it. Went over there and it was a freshly plowed corn field. Bird had gone down a short distance from the fenceline and in the field. Well it stood out to me like a training bumper against the black mud. Lined him up and sent him. He held a beautiful line and about 200 yrds out you could see him accelerate as he saw the bird. It was cool!!!! To say I was happy would be an understatement. Drake will be 20 months on 12/24. (ie... my handle Drake 224, name/bday) He is really coming along nicely!!!! I love it.

Now, of course I am telling only the good part of the trip... my dog wanted to lay on my gear instead of the mud, getting everything muddy. My jacket, my bag, my gun...everything. That sucked. He also did not always want to lay down in the mud, I guess I didn't want to either? He also wanted to compete with the other dogs and broke on the shot, a mad dash to the bird. Things to work on....

I choose to focus on the positive. I chose to be frustrated part of the time Sat with him, until that retrieve!!! Patience a lot of times would make me a better dog trainer.

The best part was watching all three dogs fight over the birds. That wounded spec never had a chance.

The cat deal was pretty funny, that cat hauled a$$. Probably lives in El Paso now?

Thanks for the compliments on Drake. It has taken a lot of time. Would do it all again in a heartbeat! Never thought it would be so rewarding. Almost turned down the free dog because I knew how much time it would take. Well dog training isn't exactly work IMO. You really get to enjoy watching the dogs progress and that makes it all enjoyable. Not all of it, but a lot of it. There are times . But I don't have a temper .

He did great. If it makes you feel any better Kate still hates the muddy rice fields, too. SHe just isn't use to laying in the mud yet. She didn't do so hot on our hunt, I think she was worried about the other dogs getting her birds. That is how it goes with a puppy, every day is different.

Don't be giving me no credit, I've been nothing more than an assistant. I have no patience for dog training.

You have worked hard and Drake has learned well. The hard work you put in over the offseason is paying dividends big time.

Keep at it and you'll work out those little issues.

No doubt. that sucker got breasted in the field. It wasn't pretty.

Glenn, your dog is a rocket. I think she taught Drake that he was going to have to be quicker if he wanted anything. Towards the end, he was going as fast as I've ever seen him. I've seen him run after cripples pretty fast before, but racing Kate was a real challenge for him. She is a bullet of energy. Great looking dog.

It doesn't get cold in Texas, heck 'ol Duck Lorange was hunting in his skivies on Saturday. Said it was real pleasant out.

I got a little chilled, too. I know Kate was shivering her butt off. I wouldn't want put my bare belly down in that cold mud either.

Drake, Kate is kinda scrawny looking but she is quick. She is all muscle. When she gets more experience I think she's gonna be alright. She is figuring it all out. She is the most layed back, lazy dog you have ever seen around the house but let a bird fall to the ground and she turns into a yeller flash. I bet she thins out at least a hundred rags by the end of the season as she plows thru the spread.

Mudman, I really enjoyed visiting with you. Come on back down and let's go fishing sometime. We can go hit some of your old Port O'Connor haunts.

Darn I know my Thermotec long johns must be working good because I thought Saturday was a nice pleasant morning where I didn't have to break a sweat!

If I was gonna pick some good hunting weather, Saturday was it.

Dwayne, you got a good dog for sure. I still would have liked to see him retrieve that cat!!

That's awesome. Dogs are a lot of fun aren't they? When I'm goose hunting, Bailey wants to lay close to me also. I guess she thinks I'm ready to play if I'm laying on the ground with her. Whe I get in a blind, no problems. Good luck with the rest of the training.

It was good weather. The wind got my hands cold and then I started getting a little chilled. First time this year. Certainly not because it was cold.

The cat thing was funny. I don't think it would have been good for Drake or the cat in that exchange. Cat would have died and Drake would have come out with less hair? LOL

That's probably it Shorty. I have duck hunted on the ground and he acts strange on those hunts as well. Will not heel. Same thing Saturday. I'm going to have to train while on the ground. Then I can probably get him out of my face. There are no issues in a blind on when I'm on a stool. He just doesn't understand me on the ground, must think its play time??? Good observation, thanks.

Dewayne...No doubt, hunting with multiple dogs is a tough situation on the dogs and dogs trainers. Those buggers are so competitive. They don't understand why they can't get every bird.....Drake was outstanding...I'd love to see him take on 40 or 50 geese by himself....I should have brought the tan dog...Then we would have had some real fun...Kate and Tanner would have been well matched in speed...but Tanner would have breasted out 90 percent of those crows before they got in hand...lol....It would have been a cluster. Enjoyed da hunt fellas....Next time we need to hog tie Glenn so we could stay out in the field til they quit flying.....I hate leaving geese to live another day

LMAO. No doubt...together we could probably do it. He's a pretty big boy.

I enjoyed the hunt myself, a good time had by all.
